Mood board

I have made a mood board online to show what I will like in my trailer. This is the link to the  mood board: http://www.gomoodboard.com/boards/Bo7vsgwL/share

In the trailer the three teenagers will be running off so they don't get caught, so I decided that if I had a long shot of them running away, and I will also like to have a long shot of them from the front running away from the front.

Within my trailer I would like to show that something mysterious and interesting will happen. So I thought of having the three teenagers sitting in the car staring at the house that will be robbed. This will be a long shot of the teenagers in a car, after a second or two i will allow the camera to zoom into the car from the front slowly. On this picture the field and the car with the lights on are being represented to create a crime based genre scene.

I think that it would be interesting if I had a close up shot of the owner of the house dialing 999 to call the cops as she comes into her house and sees the three teenagers doing a robbery, and sees her house unclean, and wrecked. This picture  to of the phone is shown to create tension.

I would use these colours because I think that these colours mostly connote the crime based genre. Red may connote maybe the death within the TV dram. Blue may connote the crime based genre because it may connote the police tape to show the audience that there may be an investigation going on. the white and black will show that it may be very upsetting. Well I think that these are mostly used in many crime based trailers, posters and TV dramas.

I thought of trying to add a police car/ police because they normally play a main part In the episodes in most crime episodes. This will make it interesting because it will make the trailer more dramatic. This is a clue to a crime based genre.

This trailer is a crime based and I thought of having a shot that will show that there has been a robbery. So I thought of having a long shot of many objects from the house broken or maybe dashed on the floor. This will show the audience that there has been a robbery and this will also make it interesting and shocking.

My TV trailer will be about a robbery which will be taking place in a home. So I thought of having three teenagers trying to break into a house. There will be a close up of  a shot of the teenagers trying to break in.

My description of my TV trailer

I have decided what shots will appear, what will happen and also the different use of sounds in the trailer. So I have made a description of what will happen in each episode.

Description:
Episode 1: part 1, in part 1 there will be two boys (Jayden) and (Hunter) and one girl (April), age 15 who will be sitting down talking to each about a robbery. (Jayden) will dare them to burglar a house. In this episode there will be diegetic sound of the group talking and then when the shot is about to end there will be a non- diegetic sound. There will then be the group walking away. Also there will be a close up of a car with the group inside talking and staring at the house which will be robbed. April thinks its a bad idea and sits back and doesn't say anything.

Episode 2: In this episode there will be a shot of the Jayden, Hunter and April trying to get into Linda's house. There will be diegetic sound and then there will be a shot of the group in the house. There will be a close up of the shot of what has gone missing or what is in the house that they have broken. There will be diegetic sound of the alarm going off. The camera will fade and make a mide- shot of the alarm. There will be a close up the Linda coming into the room looking shocked; there will be non-diegetic sound of the people crying and scared but on the screen it will show them with tears. Close up a mobile phone, lady dialing 999. There will be a non diegetic sound of someone getting shot. (This will not appear on the screen).

Episode 3 is when the police get involved and try to sort the situation out. The episode will start off with a long shot of a police car outside Linda's car with the police man coming out and a non diegetic sound of the Police siren going off. The police man would shout something out which is diegetic sound and then there will be all three teenagers coming out slowly. There will be Non diegetic sound of them breathing deeply to show that they are really scared.

Episode 4 Is when the three teenagers are handcuffed and are told to sit in a car. Jayden runs off and the other two sit in the car. Police run after Jayden and he gets caught again. There would be a mid shot of the teenagers sitting at the back and the police man and his sidekick sitting next to him at the front. The police car drives off.

Starting my planning

I have decided to work in pairs with (Natasha). I have decided that the genre of my TV drama trailer will be a crime based. I thought about my characters and I would like to have Investigators, police, victim, criminals and a few other people who are not that important. I decided to do a crime genre because I have seen a few crime genre trailers which were created by other students in the past: so I thought it would be interesting to create a crime trailer. I also thought that I could add a horror genre to it as-well; in my research I made a survey on survey monkey which gave me the results of which TV genre is the most popular, and according to my survey Horror is the most popular so far, even- though they are results from only a few people.

I think that my trailer will be set in school but I will make the area seem as if it is a place where a real crime scene would happen or be filmed. In my drama trailer I am only allowed to add scenes which are appropriate for me. So I am not allowed any weapons, no swearing or any scenes that would not be liked. Natasha and I have decided the story of our TV drama trailer. We decided that the crime in our trailer would be a robbery/ burglary. for my planning I have made a mind map of what will appear on my trailer. I have also wrote a short summary of what will happen in the trailer.

Test audience research:

I have interviewed a few people who are part in my media studies class to help me do a research task. This research task is called the Test audience. I am going to show them two different trailers; “Sherlock series 4” and “silent witness series 18”. I am then going to ask them questions about the two trailers.

This is what I have done:
  • ·        Sherlock series 4 teaser (official)

  • ·        Silent witness series 18 trailer BBC1

Questions:
  • ·        Which trailer do you like best?
  • ·        What would you rate each trailer out of 10?
  • ·        Which trailer makes you want to watch it?
  • ·        What do you think can be improved?
  • ·        Do you think any of these two trailers give away what the TV drama will be about?
  • ·        How can you tell if these trailers are crime based

I have filmed five 6 former's and my teacher to take part in this Test audience research. I have filmed them watching the trailers and then answering the questions. Here are a few pictures...

Answering the questions:
  • Which trailer do you like best? Most of the interviewees said that the Sherlock Holmes trailer was the best because it was better even though they thought that Silent witness was good too.
  • ·        What would you rate each trailer out of 10? They said that they would rate Sherlock Holmes 8/10 and Silent witness 6/10
  • ·        Which trailer makes you want to watch it? They all said that Sherlock Holmes makes them make them watch it because it is good and interesting.
  • ·        What do you think can be improved? Most of them said that Silent witness should be improved because it didn't really build up.Also they think that the editing should be improved.
  • ·        Do you think any of these two trailers give away what the TV drama will be about? Yes there was enough information in it and Sherlock might be much more exciting.
  • ·        How can you tell if these trailers are crime based? Yes, because they both had investigators and police also blood.

,                    This has shown me that if i want a good trailer i should give out the right amount of information to persuade people to watch my trailer. Also, I have to  make it clear so they know what is happening and also to show them what kind of TV Drama genre it is. Also, i think i should make it exciting and more realistic so the audience who watch it are getting really into it. I know want to show a few main characters who would be acting in trailer to show the who will be the main characters in the Drama. I also think that if i do this the audience would be more exited to watch it. I must also build it up to what the drama will be about and i must also ensure to make the editing perfect, because i think that if the editing isn't perfect they will not want to watch it.

Sound, logos and texts used in a TV trailer

In a TV trailer there are many sounds which are used such as Non diegetic and diegetic sound. Non diegetic sound is the sound of someone or something that is not on the screen such as: backing track, person talking ( but not on the screen), crying, breathing but not on the screen and many more. Diegetic sound is the sound of someone or something which appears on the screen such as: a person seen crying on the screen, person taking on the screen, car noises on the screen and many more. Trailers have music to it depending on what sort of genre is: so for example if the trailer was a horror the trailer would have music which is tense and makes the audience jump.

Also there are many logos used in TV trailers such as the logo of the company of which TV channel the trailer will be seen on. Mostly the "BBC" and "ITV" logos are used the most, these logos i think are more popular. This logo is usually seen at the beginning and then at the end. The other logos which are used in different trailers are the logos of different social media icons such as: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and maybe you-tube. Trailers normally have these logos at the end of the trailer. They have these logos at the end so that the audience can share the trailer or visit there website and learn more, or maybe visit the website to see other trailers which have been created by the TV channel.

The trailer uses a lot of texts, usually in the middle of the trailer and the beginning and at the end. The texts are used at the beginning because they show the name of the trailer. They are used in the middle because they give the audience a hint of what is happening and what the trailer is about, the text in the middle also may have a question to leave the audience/ viewers thinking. Also in some trailers texts are used in the middle to tell the audience the names of the main characters, this is only if the trailer has shown the main characters. Texts are used at the end because it shows the name of the different social media icons and also the title of the trailer reappears, and also it may have a question at the end.

Comparing 'Thirteen' and 'The level' trailer

The two trailers have similarities and differences. The 'Thirteen' trailer had the title of the at the beginning, after it showed the audience what TV programme it is going to be seen on, whereas 'The level' trailer had the title of the at the end and started with a close up of a car. 'The level' trailer seemed as if it had a reflection whereas the 'Thirteen; trailer had the title written normally. The 'Thirteen' trailer also starts with writing however 'The level' trailer doesn't and starts with non diegetic sound of a girl. Both trailers are a genre of crime, in the 'Thirteen' trailer the girl was missing so it had investigators and police init. whereas 'The level' had a person who had passed away (well that is what the viewers may think because there are people holding the coffin, and they seem upset). In this trailer there were also investigators and police who were involved, to find out what happened. Both trailers were a crime genre but they were both different kinds of crime genre.

The trailer 'Thirteen' has social media icons to allow the audience/ viewers to share or visit there website. However 'The level' has no icons at the beginning or at the end to allow the audience to share the trailer. Both trailers start off with non- diegetic sound, but 'The level' started off with a girl humming and then a man speaking whereas 'Thirteen' started off with a (female) investigator speaking about a young girl (Ivy), who went missing. Both trailers had people feeling upset and both trailers persuade the audience to watch the Drama.

In my opinion, I think that the 'Thirteen trailer' was more interesting than the other trailer. I think this because the 'Thirteen trailer' had Non diegetic sound which was tense and made the audience want to see it. The 'Thirteen trailer' had a scene where the girl was running but the scene also seemed as if the girl was running.  think that the 'thirteen trailer had better sounding to it whereas 'The level trailer' had better characters who acted well. The main girl who was rewarded was a good actress because she shows her emotions and this shows the audience how she feels and that something is wrong.

Case study 3: Scream Queens (Extra)

I am analysing another TV drama for my research and this drama is called Scream Queens. The genre to this is Comedy horror, Thriller and I also think it has a lot of action in it. I am going to use the CEMS analysis to analyse this TV drama, like I did with ‘Thirteen.
At the beginning of the Trailer there is a long shot of a girl shouting something out which is called diegetic sound and the shot is called the long shot. It is a long shot of a girl, slowly the camera zooms into her which makes the shot a mid-shot of the girl. There is a middle shot of a girl walking looking scared with blood on her hands. Also a diegetic sound appears saying "Something bad has happened". This makes the audience think about how she got the blood on her hands, and was the bad thing that happened. The camera suddenly goes above the girl which know makes it an Aries/ long shot if her. Using non diegetic sound, writing appears saying "a mystery was born". This makes the viewed think about what the mystery is and how the mystery began

There is a long shot of a girl in a bath tub with another girl sitting outside of the bath tub.  The camera slowly zooms in and has a close up of the girl in the bath tub who is staring in one place without blinking. This makes the audience want to know why she is just sitting there. A voiceover of a girl appears which is diegetic sound which says "she is dead". This makes the audience scared and want to know what happened to the girl in the tub and how she died. As the camera has a close up of the girl's face you could hear diegetic sound of people screaming and suddenly you see a few girls ruining and screaming, this scene makes the audience want to know what happened, and why the ladies/ girls are running away. Writing shows up with a loud bang noise which is non diegetic. The writing says "Now the revenge begins". The audience don't know what revenge which makes them more interested into the trailer.

There is a long shot of a car with two people in there talking to each other, the way there speak tells the viewers that they are really scared.  There is a mid-shot of three girls walking from the back, the camera goes to the front. The way the girls are dressed up shows the audience that they are posh and rich. The girl in blue clothes has an interview with an old lady. There is a close up of the girl’s face smiling. The camera goes to where the three girls are walking down the stairs, and then back to the interview of where there's a close up of her taking her glasses off. Behind the diegetic sound you could hear non diegetic sound of the backing track all the way through the trailer. The camera goes and makes a mid-shot of the girls walking behind the main girl who is talking. There is a close up of a few other girls who look like they have been waiting for her. The next scene is back at a party where there is a close up of drinks in a glass. There is a long shot a lady ad a girl who are waiting for every one’s attention. Then there is a close up of a grow women talking. While the lady is talking there is mid shot of a group of girls standing in a line and then walk off the camera goes behind them. In this scene the audience may be thinking why are the girls standing in a line and walking.

There is a close up of the girls no then a close up of the main girl who starts to speak. When she looks to the side it tells the audience that something is happening or something has happened which makes the audience suspicious about it. Writings appears which says "F the wicked minds of glee American horror story". So now the audience know that it is an American horror story, even though it doesn't look like a horror yet. There is a close up of a girl who is being introduced to another girl named "Jennifer's" by another lady. The camera then concentrates on Jennifer who is there sitting and eating awkwardly. There is a long shot the posh girl opening the door and walking towards the camera. The camera then has a mid-shot of the girl with a few other posh girls with her. In this Ariana Grande is also standing by the posh girl's side. This makes the audience want to watch it because Ariana Grande is someone famous and many people like her, she also is a role model to some people.

There is a close up of the girls walking in the corridor where there is a close up of a man’s hand who is cleaning the floor with a toothbrush. There is a mid-shot of the girls talking and then a long shot of other girls standing in a line. The camera shot goes back to the girls but now they are sitting on the chair and drinking. There is a close up of the girls arguing which shows they might not get along well, whereas the scene where the girls sat down and were drinking shows the audience that they get along well. There is another mid shot of Ariana Grande with two other girls. This would make the audience want to watch it because Ariana Grande is acting in the drama too. There is a close up of a girl and a boy talking, and their face expression show that something is wrong or something will happen because they both seem scared. This would urge the audience to watch it because they would want to know/ see what will happen and why both people seem worried.

There is a close up of a girls face buried in the garden and in the background there is an image of another girl who's head is also buried, but her head is blurry so you cannot see her properly. This affect is used because the camera wants to pay more attention to the first girl. There is a close up of a hand turning a key, and a girl who is buried screaming. Suddenly the light shines upon her which gives the viewers a little hint of what that vehicle might be. The close up of a girl goes closer and closer as the girl screams and then the colour of her face changes and the camera freezes for about with non-diegetic and diegetic sound of the girl. Then the camera goes to a lady with non-diegetic sound behind her talking about the same incidents. There is an over shoulder shot of a girl looking at her reflection through a mirror as she sees a red person and then screams. Then there is a close up of the main characters with the names on. The editor shows the main characters because people would want to know who the main characters in the drama are. There is a close up of a police women turning her head around, and screams as she sees a close up of a knife in another police women’s neck. This is where the trailer gets interesting and makes the audience have the interest to watch it.

The scenes have a quick pace as they move from one scene to the other to make the trailer seem more tense and interesting. There is a close up of a red man who is dressed as a devil and a close up of a girl on the floor covered in blood screaming and scared. At this point of the trailer the trailer gets a bit tense and more interesting. There is a long shot of the group of girls facing a wall looking at the writing which says "Kappa will die", the writing seems like it was written in blood. There is a close up of a girl in a bath tub covered in blood and then a long shot of the group of girls staring at the camera looking scared. There is a long shot of the girls having dinner together, and then the camera goes straight to a bunch of candles were a girl lays dead in the middle of the candles. The long shot shows us the girls walking looking serious and then the editing gets even faster and slows down a bit where the red devil grabs the main girls mouth. A t the end the title of the drama is written, and seems like it is also written in blood as the blood comes dripping down. Then there are three icons to Facebook, YouTube and twitter. This wants the audience to share and subscribe the trailer.

Case study 2: The level (Episode 1)

This new trailer for a new TV drama is everywhere to allow people to read about what it is about, so they can watch it. My teacher found the trailer on the internet. The trailer was on a newspaper which is called Metro. The link to this online newspaper is:  http://metro.co.uk/2016/09/29/itvs-newest-crime-drama-the-level-is-looking-pretty-creepy-in-this-trailer-6160619/
My teacher thought it would be a good idea if the trailer group analysed this for our research. So I did a CEMS analysis for this trailer like I did with the other trailer: (Thirteen).

At the beginning of this trailer there is non- diegetic sound of a girl and it seems as if she is humming and then a man starts to speak, this is also non diegetic sound because you cannot see the man on the screen. The camera slowly zooms into the car which has a man sitting inside. As the camera zooms in to the car and captures a picture of a man may make the audience think that the man in the car may be talking. The audience may think what is so important about the car an the man and what will the man be doing in the drama. The lights which are on at the front of the car seem as if they are eyes because it is dark. Then there is a big bang which leads the screen pitch black and then a close up of someone's hand putting a police banner around something. This tells the audience that something terrible has happened and would make the audience want to know what is going on. Straight away the trailer tells the audience that this is a crime genre trailer. There then is a close up of two investigators who a recognisable. This would make the audience want to see the trailer even more if they had recognised the characters. As one of the investigator walks away there is a mid shot of another lady who is getting out of the car this shows the audience that all these people must be important in the TV drama.
There is a mid shot of a lady looking upset and holding a coffin. This tells the viewers that someone has passed away. The people behind the women look upset but you could tell that the people have been edited, and it show that it is blurry. While this is showing on the screen there is non diegetic sound of a lady talking. There is a close up of a man looking up at the sky and then a close up another man looking down into his hands which tells the audience/viewers that he is stressed and upset. The camera then makes a long shot of a man standing with loads of cars and lorries around him and then he turns around looking at the camera. This tells the audience that there is something behind the camera. This shows the audience that the camera is showing only the important people who are going to be in the TV drama the most.

There is a close up shot of someone in the car and it seems like the car is being pushed over or it has crashed. As the camera zooms out it shows us what is happening, it shows that the lorry is pushing the car and the person in the car is not enjoying it. There then is a close up of a person facing their back towards the camera, and this would make the audience want to know who it is.Then there is a mid shot of a girl getting rewarded, this would make the audience think about why she has got an award and why is she so important in the trailer. This scene would make the audience watch the TV drama because the girl who is getting rewarded is familiar and a star in other TV dramas which are already out. Suddenly the camera makes a close up of the same girl, but at a different scene, and in this scene she is crying and seems really upset. The viewers would actually end up confused because they would think that she was happy and being rewarded, whereas now she is upset. They would wonder what happened to make her feel this way. Also the girl has a purple eye and is all bruised up, this would make the audience think how she got a purple eye.

You could hear heavy breathing as the girl cries and walks forward towards the camera. This is called diegetic sound. Also, in this trailer non diegetic sound is used when there is a man and women talking but they are not on the screen, this makes the audience want to knowing who is talking. The people who are talking and not on the screen are talking as if they are talking to someone or telling what is happening. At the end the title comes up and the humming from the girl comes up, just like the beginning of the trailer. The title is written unusually because the two letters at the end are reflected, the same way the first two letters are written. The title would make the audience think why it is called the level. Also the background behind the title is clear and gets blurry as the camera zooms into the title a bit more. The background has a building which is surrounded by water, and the clouds in the sky seem like the are edited.

Conventions, Forms and codes of a TV drama trailer:(done on prezi)

I learnt how to work on Prezi while doing my research. I think that Prezi is another way of doing a power point, and I more fun. I never knew how to use Prezi before until know, I think I will be able to use Prezi again someday to add my research in to it. These are two screen shots of me doing my Prezi.

This is my prezi that I made to show my research:

Case study: Thirteen BBC 3 TV drama

Case study: Thirteen (BBC 3 Drama)
This TV drama was released in February 2016, it’s a new trailer for a TV Drama: it is in the same style and format as our TV Drama Trailers for controlled assessment. I am analysing this TV Drama using the CEMS analysis.

At the beginning of the trailer there is a close up of a logo of the TV channel it will be aired on. After a few seconds the logo disappears and appears at the bottom left hand corner. There is an over the shoulder shot which is showing the audience what the character ‘Ivy’ sees in her vision after thirteen years. While that scene appears there is writing which says ‘Pure Drama’ this also tells us that this trailer is a new drama for BBC 3. Suddenly, there is a close up of a foot which slowly crushes a flower. The foot seems like a dirty foot which hasn’t been looked after properly. This makes the audience want to know whose foot it is because all they know so far is that it is a girl’s foot, but as the audience knows girls don’t usually have a foot like that, so that makes the audience more conscious of wanting to know more. After the foot the camera goes straight to the girl (Ivy). The camera pauses for a bit, with a mid-shot to show the audience how the girl (Ivy) looks now. The girl (Ivy) looks pale and shows the audience that she looks ill and hasn’t been cared for properly. Ivy then runs off and the camera shows her running off from the back, while the backing track appears with the voice over which then and then cuts straight to the investigation scene.

The investigation scene has an investigator who is sitting with Ivy who went missing thirteen years ago, in a small room which looks cold and tiny, the room looks as if it has been filtered to change the lighting of the light, and to make it look dark and dull, and then there is a side shot of Ivy sitting facing the Investigator. The camera goes straight to a lady looking into a mirror and then the camera fades away into darkness and cuts into the bit where the girl is running, and then the scene goes to when Ivy is in the phone box. In this scene you could hear 3 sounds which are non-dietetic and dietetic: heavy breathing, crying and the backing track this makes the audience jump, and scared. The scenes jump cut when the girl is running to make the audience want to know more. This is the flashback of what happened to Ivy when she got lost. The colour black shows up whenever the scene moves from one to the other. Also whenever the scene changes there is always a person ending or starting the scene. This is used because the editor wants the trailer to flow all the way through.

Ivy is in a room sitting silently, which shows the audience that she is scared and her dad who is standing with her looks worried to, this also makes us want to watch the TV drama. The camera slowly moves sideways at the TV which is showing the news and an image of Ivy when she was young, thirteen years ago, and then the TV gets covered by a person which then leads the scene to another. This scene has Ivy with another man and a voice over appears. The camera slowly fades into darkness and a close up of the investigators legs slowly walking down in to a dark room; there is then a close up of the investigators hand which makes the audience wonder if this was the room that Ivy was trapped in for the last thirteen years. The camera has a close up of Ivy’s face which looks like a CCTV clip; this means that Ivy was interviewed. Then there is fast paced editing which makes the viewers want to see it: it creates tension and excitement.

There is an ariel shot of Ivy running happily with someone else which tells the audience that she is happy. There is a long shot of Ivy’s back which tells us that she was not treated well and there is a close up of her eye which fades away quickly. At the end there is an image of Ivy sitting on her bed dressed up nicely which shows the audience that she is being treated well. It also ends with a question which says ‘who is Ivy Moxam?’ Also the logo reappears but bigger because it reminds us that it is a new trailer for a new TV drama. The lamp behind Ivy gives a smooth and soft feeling showing she is happier than before. There also is a voice-over of a man which persuades the audience to watch the TV drama, because the man says ‘Thirteen on BBC 3’. At the bottom there are also 3 icons for the audience to share the link. This helps with the audience viewing because if one person shares the link to someone else, then they will watch it and they will share it to someone else. At the end the picture Ivy tells us that the trailer doesn’t end there, something else will happen, I know this because Ivy is looking diagonal and her facial expression tells the audience that she is still worried of what is going to happen.

Different TV Genres

I searched up all the different TV genres for my research and they are:
*Children's- Drama, activities, entertainment/ comedy and factual.
*Comedy- Character, impressionists,music,satire,sitcoms.
*Drama- Action, adventure, biographical, classic/ period, crime, historical, horror, supernatural, legal and court room, medical and musical.
*Factual- Antiques, arts, culture, and media, crime and justice, families, relationships and many more...

Out of these genres I like Horror the best because when a trailer is a horror genre, it gives an audience a shock and makes the audience want to watch the drama. In my research I found out that comedy is the most popular TV genre so far. I thought that Horror would have been the most popular, however I was wrong.

Research

For my research i have decide to do a questionnaire to find out what sort of TV genre people like to watch. For my research I have learnt how to use survey monkey to get information for my TV trailer. I used this to get information from the audience about what genre they like. This is a screenshot of when i was doing my survey on Survey monkey.

Using Survey monkey was an easier way of me finding out information on what TV genres the audience like. This link is the link to the "TV trailer survey."
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/9KZVNQQ

Before I used survey monkey I used Straw poll which was more difficult way of making a survey; it only created one question whereas survey monkey created many questions at once.

Initial thoughts on controlled assessment work

In my GCSE Media studies course work I was given a few options to do such as TV, Documentary, Advert, animation, Trailer for a TV programme. My three favorite options are Animation, a trailer for a TV programme and a Documentary. I have chosen these options because i will be able to do the camera work and the editing. Overall I want to do a trailer for a TV program. This is because I really want to do filming, and look at different shots there are when you are filming.
